Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships India 2011
Our Head Instructor Rob Schembri was selected as Head Coach for Poomsae in the 5th World Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships and our student Jarod O'Gorman successfully won a place to represent Australia in these Championships.
The contest was held in Chennai India, January 2011, as a category two sport as part of the Commonwealth Games.
Fantastic result for our student Jarod O'Gorman who won 2 Medals representing Australia as the only Junior.
He achieved a bronze medal in the Individual Poomsae event and a Bronze in Pairs Poomsae event. The pairs event was an extraordinary effort as he formed a pair with a 28yr old female from W. A who he had not met until he arrived in India, they both trained hard to obtain this amazing Bronze.
Jarod also had the most competitors out of everyone in his Individual & Pairs.

Jarod O'Gorman - International achievements
World Culture Taekwondo Expo
We are very proud of Jarod who has just returned from his first international competition in Korea on the 2nd & 3rd July 2010. He competed in a Poomase Competition in a very tough A Division (with his broken arm still in a splint and he strained his quad muscle two days before Competition) ... taking all this into account came:
6th in the World Taekwondo Culture Expo in Poomsae
Won Silver (2nd) in the world against 30 competitors in Spinning Roundhouse in Continuous Board Breaking - breaking 9 pieces of wood in 7 seconds
Taekwondo STA Poomsae Trials
Jarod recently competed in the Taekwondo STA Poomsae selection trials for 2 events and he has been selected to represent Australia in each:
Commonwealth Games Taekwondo Poomsae : this is a new selected sports to be contested in January 2011 as a category two sport as part of the Commonwealth Games, the event is being held in India.
5th World Poomsae Taekwondo Championships : this event held in Uzbekistan in October 2010 .
Furthermore he competed in a pairs event with a female partner from another Club (Taylor Summersby from Koryo Taekwondo) they finished 2nd and 3rd, just missing out on selection for Worlds and Commonwealth Games Pair event by 1 spot. They were the youngest pairs to compete at this event as the category is (14 - 35 age group) and they were simply sensational, with their best years to come.
International Taekwondo Korean Open
Taekwondo Australia recently invited Jarod and 7 others to go back to Korea and train with a top Korean Grandmaster. The Australian squad including 2 Juniors and 6 Seniors (Jarod being the youngest) will be at a special training camp for 3 days and then compete in another International Taekwondo Korean Open competition afterwards. Jarod leaves on 29 August for 10 days. This Camp will be invaluable and fantastic preparation to learn from the best Grandmaster's in the World in the lead up to all his 3 x International Competitions.

Pan Pacific Master Games - November 2010
Schembris Taekwondo Team of 22 attended the Games
At the recent Pan Pacific Masters Games held on the Gold Coast, over 10,000 competitors from the pacific region congregated to participate. Once again taekwondo was one of the 34 sports included in the nine days of events.
Our most successful Master Games yet !! Our accumulated total of medals:
Gold: 38
Silver: 30
Bronze: 18

Schembri’s have been making the journey north to participate in the Pan Pacific Masters for the past ten years. For some of our team, it was the first time they had participated at the Pan Pacific or any competition, for others like Rob Schembri, Head Instructor it was the sixth time he had competed.
The Pan Pacific Masters has a more relaxed atmosphere than other tournaments. It provides the perfect stepping stone for the older taekwondo players, new to the sport thinking about competing. There is the opportunity to socialise with fellow taekwondo competitors as well as competitors from other sports. As a club, we entered for the competition and to have fun.
A great recognition of the success we had on the day was awarded to Schembris Taekwondo for the ‘biggest Taekwondo Group' in the tournament.
Well done to everyone - fantastic effort. |
